Children are learning more about the food they’re consuming.
Juice Plus+ Company has placed tower gardens at local Boys & Girls Clubs. The General Heiser Boys & Girls Club in Dumfries was one of them.
Crystal Stephenson, a Juice Plus+ Company distributor and Boys & Girls Club volunteer, installed them and has been leading a program.
Taking care of plants is one topic the program focuses on.
It also teaches children about where their food comes from about how to eat healthy.
“This program just has really helped them to try new foods, and I feel like it’s so important getting them to try the things and to experiment with things maybe they haven’t tried before,” she explained.
The participants have made kale chips, salads and smoothies.
They also have a weekly assignment – to eat a certain color fruit or vegetable.
Stephenson wants the program to have a ripple effect.
“I hope that this program not only is affecting the kids but is going home and affecting their families, as well, because … that is so important – that we all eat better,” she said.
