For many years, priests asked for God’s protection as boaters embarked on their journeys.
The Occoquan River Maritime Association (ORMA) is continuing the tradition on May 18.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., they are running the annual Blessing of the Fleet, according to a release.
Discover Occoquan will be occurring that same day.
Fire boats and emergency personnel will proceed a VIP boat that holds public figures. Yachts that are decorated will follow the VIP boat.
They will travel to Occoquan and down the Occoquan River before the blessing begins at 10:45 a.m.
Community members will be able to see the parade at the Mamie Davis Park dock and at marinas on the river.
Local boaters may participate in the free event and can enter a drawing for a chance to win prizes.
More information is available on the Blessing of the Fleet website.
