Benton Middle School Principal Denise Huebner has been named as the new Associate Superintendent for eastern Prince William elementary schools.
According to a release, Huebner was named to the position by the Prince William County School Board on May 17. She will begin her duties on July 1.
“The incoming Associate Superintendent’s history as a one-time elementary principal provides a powerful understanding of K-5 student needs, challenges, and opportunities. Her middle school experience makes her ideally suited to prepare students to take the next steps on their educational journey. As an administrator, Huebner is committed to helping teachers enrich their classroom skills, and ability to mentor other colleagues to fuel greater student achievement. She gets parents involved in helping every student succeed, and cultivates strong ties to community service,” stated a release.
In her new role, Huebner will oversee 16 schools and will serve as a member of Superintendent Steve Walts’ staff. She will be taking on the post currently held by Craig Gfeller, who will be pursuing a new opportunity in New York, according to a release.

Under Huebner’s leadership, Benton Middle School expanded student engagement in the vital fields of science, technology, engineering, and math through increased participation and success in science fairs, and with innovative programs like “Introduce a Girl to Engineering.” Huebner also ensures that Benton celebrates diversity, helping new English Learners to succeed, and all students to embrace one-another as assets to our community.
Huebner says, “I’ve always believed that focusing on the needs of each individual child leads to increased success for every student and every great school. I’m honored by the chance to apply my philosophy to making a larger contribution to the students of Prince William County. “

The newly named Associate Superintendent holds a Master of Education from Regent University and earned her bachelor’s degree, majoring in special education, at Northern Illinois University. She joined PWCS as a teacher at Signal Hill Elementary in 2005, and served as assistant principal at Yorkshire Elementary before becoming principal of Marshall Elementary in 2011. During much of her tenure at Marshall, Huebner also served as principal of Woodbine Preschool. She was named principal of Benton Middle School in 2015.
