Beautiful works of art are coming to Manassas for the Manassas First Friday Gallery Walk on May 6.
According to a release, last year, a Manassas arts group began working with Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) Professor Zac Jackson to create outdoor sculptures that could be displayed in the city.
To make sure they were creating work that the community wanted, Jackson and the group created a website where they could view and comment on sculpture submissions and progress, according to a release. The group also partnered with Manassas to find locations for the sculptures in the city, where they’ll make their big debut at the Gallery Walk, stated a release.
The Gallery Walk will kick off at 5 p.m. at the Center for the Arts at the Candy Factory with a reception, where maps of the sculpture locations will be given out, according to a release. Each year, new artists will have their work displayed at the locations around the city, according to a release.
More on this year’s artists, and art in Manassas, from a release:
The 2016 artists include Alex Dorney, Paige Fischer, Audrey D’agastinio, Hunter Knight, Frank Albert, Harry Mayer, Micheal Flatequal, Harold Martin, Jessica Morales, Sarah Fischer, Christian Gallik, and Andrea Rivera. Some of the pieces were created specifically for the Historic Downtown, like Belle, a Civil War era lady or Danville, a train made of geometric shapes that represent the many trains that pass through the city. Others capture the artist’s imagination, like Distracted, a representation of a person staring at their cellphone.
The Sculpture project is part of an ongoing initiative by the City of Manassas to encourage art and artistic expression. Other art projects in the city include the Banner Art Competition, the Little Bits project and other competitions held throughout the year. To find out more, visit www.manassascity.org/art.
