Young athletes have a new facility where they can strive to reach their goals.
The Ali Krieger Sports Complex has opened in Dumfries. A grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Saturday.
The sports complex, which sits on about 30 acres near St. John Paul the Great High School, offers several multi-purpose fields, a softball field and two Little League fields.
It is named after Ali Krieger, an American soccer player.
“Out of every achievement in my career, I have to say this one means the most to me — yes, even winning a World Cup, even being an Olympian — this definitely beats all of that. And that is because it comes from my hometown,” Krieger said at the ceremony. “Prince William County has helped mold me into the woman and the professional that I am today — and for that, I am forever grateful.”
Krieger grew up in Montclair and graduated from Forest Park High School, according to Supervisor Maureen Caddigan.
She played for the Prince William Sparklers, a youth soccer team, and began playing for the United States women’s national soccer team in 2007.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup champion recently started the Ali Krieger Football Camps (AKFC). The first camp will be held at the sports complex next month.
“It will be just the beginning of our effort to help young athletes achieve success on and off the field, and have fun while doing it,” Krieger said.
