Local residents who would like to become a cat or kitten parent have plenty to choose from at the Humane Society of Northern Virginia (HSNV).
More than 20 felines are at the non-profit’s rescue center, according to Director Sherry Turner. That doesn’t include the adoptable cats that are in foster homes.
Powered by Advocates for Abused and Abandoned Pets (A3P), HSNV is seeking forever homes for these four-legged friends.
Prospective pet owners can have a meet and greet with adoptable kittens and cats in Dumfries. The center, located at 17983 Dumfries Shopping Plaza, is open from Noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
“You can come in and just hang out with them, and see who you like or who likes you,” Turner said.
Due to an influx of kittens, the humane society is always in need of foster homes.
“Fosters are the lifeblood to the rescue, and without them we just couldn’t do what we’re doing,” Turner explained. “I mean, our facility is nice, but it’s just not big enough to accommodate all of those precious little lives that need help and care.”
The pet adoption application and pet foster application are available on the humane society’s website.
HSNV is seeking volunteers to assist with pet care, events, grant writing and administrative tasks. The volunteer application is on the website, as well.
“So, if you’ve got time, space, energy, we’re certainly looking forward to talking to you, ’cause we do need the help,” Turner added.
The non-profit is also accepting donations – monetary as well as pet supplies – and looking for sponsors of upcoming events.
One of these programs is the “Pets 4 Life” 1K & 5K Walk/Run that’s taking place at Prince William Forest Park on September 30. To help support the “Pets 4 Life” event, contact A3P Board President and Volunteer Christy Lynn at christylynn0269@gmail.com or (571) 435-2779.
