At Gemmis Technologies we want you to succeed and we understand that sometimes succeeding means not having to call us for every little thing that goes wrong in the office. We’ve compiled a list of tricks you can do to increase computer efficiency… And keep you from throwing your computer at a wall.
- Computer speed. The first step you can take here is to determine whether or not its your machine running slow or your broadband connections. If the problem is actually your PC, then you will next want to determine the amount of free space on the hard drive that’s holding the operating system. If Windows doesn’t have enough room to create files then performance will suffer. Clear up some space to boost speed. If that’s not enough, try Microsoft’s System Configuration tool. You’re able to disable certain performance-killer programs, preventing them from automatically starting up when you turn your computer on. However, if you’re not sure what the program or service you’re disabling does, don’t disable it. Restart your computer and enjoy the speed boost.
- Download speed. If download speed seems off, run a speed test (try www.speedtest.net). You shouldn’t be below 50 percent of your service provider’s advertised speeds. If it seems on par, then make sure you aren’t accidently downloading or uploading anything. Some torrent programs will run in the background. If that’s not the problem, try resetting your router and modem.
- Random computer restarting. Make sure random restarting doesn’t have anything to do with Window’s updates, which can restart during installation automatically. If that’s not the case, try updating your critical system drivers. If your computer sounds off then it probably needs a good cleaning, as overheating might be the cause of your problems.
- Pop-up ads. Not running your web browser but you’re still getting pop-up ads? Check to see if you’ve installed adware. This program displays unwanted ads and probably isn’t doing your computer any favors. Unfortunately, getting rid of it isn’t always easy. It’s important to use a trustworthy antivirus software to remove it and if that doesn’t work, your best bet is probably Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free, which works to remove all different types of malware. Make sure you don’t have another anti-virus program running at the same time, which could cause problems.
- Website security certificate. This one is easy. If you keep seeing “There is a problem with this website’s security certificate” chances are the problem is an incorrect system clock. Click on the clock in the lower right hand of your desktop and then select ‘change date and time settings’.
