With the winter months comes the chance for snow storms and power outages.
Community members can prepare for emergencies by following a few winter safety tips released by the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue (PWCDFR).
PWCDFR recommends that citizens build a stock of non-perishable food items and water, and create an emergency kit that contains a first-aid supplies, flashlights and batteries.
Homeowners are advised to insulate water lines located on exterior walls and get their heating system checked by a professional, according to a release.
The department encourages vehicle owners have a full tank of gas and consider replacing tires with all-weather tires.
Those planning to travel should check weather forecasts beforehand and plan extra time for their commute.
Drivers are also asked to avoid traveling when it’s dangerous and remain in their car if they become stranded.
Additional winter safety tips are available on the Prince William Emergency Information website.
