Several community members are standing together to help Prince William County students who have lunch debt.
Settle the Debt hosted a Benefit Bash at Clearbrook Center of the Arts in Lake Ridge.
Adelle LaRue Settle started the Gainesville-based fundraising effort, which seeks to “pay down” student lunch debt.
“I also advocate for state and federal policy changes, that would result in every child having a healthy, nutritious, and filling meal at school regardless of their family’s income,” Settle wrote in an email. “In order for children to fully take advantage of the excellent educational opportunities here in Prince William County, we first must be positive that every child is eating a healthy lunch, without shame.”
This month, Settle the Debt is using a space What’s Up Prince William is providing for non-profits and community-based organizations at the Farmer’s Market Woodbridge.
State Delegate Danica Roem attended the event, which took place on Saturday evening. She spoke about Settle’s efforts in helping area students.
Settle, according to Roem, has helped raise $40,000.
Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) has $313,000 of student lunch debt.
“[Adelle] didn’t see this as the insurmatchable cause,” Roem said. “She said, ‘Let’s go do something about it.’”
Settle and Roem worked together to create a bill that seeks to address the lunch debt issue.
On Saturday, Roem read a resolution commending Adelle for her diligence.
The delegate also recognized the event’s attendees.
“By you all showing up here tonight, you are showing that you do care, that you want to do something about that. Because if you came here from Gainesville, if you came here from Minnieville, if you came here from Bristow or you came here from Haymarket, or if you came here from Lake Ridge or Manassas … then that means that you’re trying to do something and you’re trying to be proactive,” Roem said. “And it’s not that you’re doing this because you have personal stake in it, you’re doing this because you care about kids.”
