Fifty years ago, Action in Community Through Service (ACTS) opened its doors to county residents who are in need.
Since its foundation, it has grown to offer several services, including a thrift store and a helpline.
To celebrate the Dumfries-based non-profit’s anniversary, the Sentara Foundation is offering a challenge grant.
Through the award, officials hope to raise $50,000 in matching funds that will support the Hunger Prevention Center, according to a release.
The center, which opened in August, provides food for as many as 1,000 families each month.
“Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center is pleased to partner with ACTS. Much like Sentara Healthcare, ACTS continuously strives to help and support the community every day,” Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center President Kathie Johnson said in a release. “We look forward to our continued relationship in an effort to improve health every day.”
ACTS and Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge have been working together to provide support for those impacted by sexual assault.
Forensic Nurse Supervisor Rhonda Boyett offers training to staff members and volunteers from ACTS.
She also notifies the organization when Sentara cares for a sexual assault survivor, so they can receive the support they need.
Additionally, the hospital serves community members at ACTS’ Beverly Warren Shelter through its mobile van twice a week.
“Sentara is one of our true local partners. We have been working together for years to serve our neighbors without expectation of anything in return. We value their expertise and dedication to the community as much as they value ours,” ACTS CEO Steve Liga said in a release. This gift from their foundation is an unexpected and wonderful surprise.”
ACTS is recognizing its anniversary by hosting a fundraiser at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas on February 28.
Sponsorships are being accepted and tickets for the gala may be purchased starting on Sunday.
More information about the event is available on ACTS’ website.
