Self-storage may not be hard to come by for Dale City residents in the coming future, if a proposal wins over the Board of County Supervisors (BOCS).
Members of the Dale City Civic Association (DCCA) learned about a special use permit for a proposed self-storage business at a meeting on Thursday.
If approved, Arcland Property Company would construct a three-story high building and several one-story facilities at the corner of Dale Boulevard and Mapledale Avenue, according to Jack Wilbern, an architect from Butz Wilbern Ltd.
The dawn-to-dusk business would offer about 1,100 storage units and would sit on no more than 120,400 square feet.
Wilbern said the project’s leaders have met with the BOCS, who suggested the group make sure enough greenery is planted on Mapledale Avenue.
“We have since then gone ahead and started paying attention to getting some more evergreens across Mapledale, some real decorative planting over in the corners and in front of the building,” he said. “And that’s something that we’re working with the supervisors’ office [on] to make sure we heard them correctly in terms of feedback.”
The BOCS also asked the team to make sure that the storage doors aren’t visible from the street.
“You can’t see the storage doors. That’s a common thing you see in a lot of self-storage facilities, where you can see the doors and [it’s] brightly lit until 2 a.m., and that sort of thing,” Wilbern said. “Supervisors’ office staff [was] very clear: We can’t do that here.”
