Since its foundation, the Salvation Army has been helping the less fortunate.
Community members can help others this fall and winter by partnering with The Salvation Army Prince William Corps in Woodbridge.
The Red Kettle Campaign is one program the non-profit is running.
“The original Red Kettle Campaign started with people who noticed that there were hungry people on Christmas,” Assistant Corp Officer Lt. Rachel Orona said.
They received permission to stand in front of a store and collect money, which was placed in a kettle used for cooking.
This year’s campaign begins on November 12 and continues through December 24.
“Each day is filled with great opportunities to give back to your community,” Orona said.
The Salvation Army is hosting an Angel Tree program, as well.
Local families who are in need can participate in the program by registering their children, whose names will be placed on an “Angel Tree.”
“From that Angel Tree, the donors will pick an angel that they would like to adopt, or sponsor, and they have the opportunity to gift that child Christmas,” Orona said.
More than 900 children have been signed up for the program.
