There’s a new mayor in the Town of Dumfries.
Mayor-Elect Derrick Wood was sworn in as mayor near Dumfries Town Hall on Sunday.
“What an incredible journey it has been. One that I know that I have not traveled by myself, because by no means am I self-made man. I’m a God-made man,” Wood told swearing-in ceremony attendees. “And I’m the result of a community of people who have actually poured into me — good, bad or indifferent. And they have shaped me into the man that I am constantly becoming.”
Wood, a board member for the Prince William County Boys & Girls Club and owner of Dyvine BBQ in Motion, explained that connecting with communities will help move the town forward.
“As a community, we must be constantly learning. As a community, we must be constantly re-inventing ourselves. As a community, we’ve got to constantly be rebuilding our images. As a community, we’ve got to continue to share our successes,” Wood said. “As a community, we’ve got to constantly be connecting with every community, and we can’t discriminate against communities that we connect with.”
Congressman Gerry Connolly also spoke at the ceremony.
“Local government, to me, is the most noble level of government, because it’s the most accountable and it affects our lives immediately,” Connolly said.
