Micron Technology in Manassas strives to be involved in the community.
As an offshoot to this goal, the memory solutions company has partnered with Leadership Prince William (LPW), a non-profit.
LPW encourages leaders to make a difference in the Prince William County community.
What’s Up Prince William spoke with Steve Silberstein, director of Global Facilities Front End and Back End Sites at Micron Technology, about why the company supports LPW.
What is Micron?
So, at a really high level, it’s transforming how the world uses information to enrich lives, and we really want to be the global leader in supplying storage and memory solutions. And those are some lofty words that when you come down to who we are here, in Virginia, is we play such a critical part in both that vision and that mission … we are the long-life products that really go into many of things we use in everyday life – like in automotive, in our autonomous future drive cars and in the safety of how those cars operate. So our memory plays just a critical role in how the world is expanding and how the world is using information.
What makes Micron a leader in the industry?
Micron really strives for making sure we bring in the right people, the right behaviors – innovation, collaboration, really focusing on our customers – and we drive that everyday in making sure that people feel empowered to do those kinds of activities, whether you’re working in manufacturing, whether you’re working in facilities, or working in any support area. We’re always looking [at] how to innovate, do things … faster, better, and with the top quality that we can.
What do you believe makes you personally successful as a leader?
Leadership is really all about your people, and it’s how do you enable people to be successful and to see a path to success for themselves and for the company. So, personnally, to me it all starts with respect for the individual, being a great listener, understanding what people need and want, and making sure that whatever your team and the people need are provided so that they can drive towards the targets and goals and metrics that we put in place.
Why does Micron support Leadership Prince William?
Micron supports Leadership Prince William, because it provides an environment with which all of us can both expand into the community, give back to the community – that’s a very, very important part of Micron’s commitment within the community it lives, and Leadership Prince William provides that environment with which to interact both with people that we work with and others in the community.
Leadership Prince William provides a great venue for our own leaders to grow. They’re able to interact with people in different fields within the industry, which allows leadership ideas and creativity to be shared among different folks. It allows – through a program called “Emergentics” – to learn more about your management style, and some of your strengths and your areas of preference of how you lead, and really just gives … a broader view of how you can grow and learn from others.
Would you recommend Leadership Prince William to other members of your team or others in your industry?
There is no doubt that I would recommend Leadership Prince William around Micron – to continue within the industry – even my family. When I took the class, I couldn’t wait for the next class. My wife – from a personal experience – she always knew I was look forward to that one Thursday class, and when the class ended I truly missed it. I missed that … bond that I had with my teammates and my classmates, and the learning that was going on. It was so important to me, I actually never left … Leadership Prince William. To me, it was all about maintaining that connection, so I’ve been on the board, played various roles on the executive committees, and participated in supporting … the organization for the last 10 years. I am active within our site, to make sure we always have the best process to pick a leader that goes into the class from a Micron class and I’m just very, very engaged with the overall organization.
