Reunited at last.
U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Lee Jones had a special surprise for his daughter Makayla, who is a third grader at Kyle Wilson Elementary School.
Jones has been deployed in Pakistan for the past six months, and was able to coordinate a surprise visit to his daughter’s classroom in time for her ninth birthday.
Jones’ wife Mary is also a member of the Air Force and spoke about the sacrifices entire families make when it comes to military service.
“We’re so excited to be here to surprise Mikayla…[military] duty is on the whole family, and she especially makes the small sacrifices. She’s gone through me deploying and now her dad deploying, and we’re so excited to welcome him home on her birthday,” said Mary Jones.
“She hasn’t seen me, and so I sent her a couple of gifts, and there were two or three nights that she wrapped herself up in the gifts that I sent her and went to bed,” said Lee Jones, continuing, “I think serving – you know, we know that we have to serve and we have to deploy – that’s the piece you don’t take into account, is when you’re gone and there’s something happening at home and you can’t be there to comfort them or help to make the situation easier.”
Jones will now be stationed at the Pentagon building.
